Kite water relaunch - 07.08.2020

Kite relaunch from the water

Kite relaunch from the water. Skill without which you can´t go into the water. Every kite beginner and also advance rider should master how to bring the kite back up in the air. When you learn new tricks, jumps or switch riding, the kite sometimes falls in the water. Kite relaunch is a manoeuvre, how to bring it back to fly. How to water relaunch a kite is easy to learn and you will learn it during your kitesurf lesson in Tarifa.

But for beginners, it can be tricky. Here are the most important steps to kite water relaunch safely:
1. Let go the bar to release all the tension from the lines. The kite will go with the wind direction.
2. Pull in the steering line on the side of the bar, which is connected to the kite closer to the edge of the wind window. This will create constant tension on one side of the bar, which brings the kite in movement.
3. Wait, the kite will slowly start to move to the side of the wind window and will go up to launch position, because of the tension on one side of the bar. If you do it too fast, it will go up in the power zone and you can fly a little bit :-) Or it falls back down and you have to start all the procedure again.
4. As the kite will get in the start position, start to ease off the tension of the steering line. If you do it too fast, the kite will fall backwards again. Do it gently, so the kite doesn't drug you too much downwind, which brings you away from your kiteboard. But no problem, if you know to bodydrag upwind :-)

For the practice of water relaunch, contact us +34 660 882 710.

Kitesurf Tarifa - 31.07.2019

Getting started in kitesurfing for beginners

Kitesurf school in Tarifa, Dragon

How long does it take to learn kitesurf?

Kiteboarding, compared to other wind and water sports, is easy to learn. Once you understand how the kite is flying, the first step of kitesurfing is mastered. The next step is body drag, where you let the kite pulls you in different directions of the wind. You need also to know to body drag upwind, which you will need later, to get your board when you lose it. The next step of learning kitesurfing is the water start, which can be difficult for somebody. But in average of 3-5 days you manage the basic kite skills and then starts the fun. If you know to wakeboard and snowboard, it will help a lot in the learning process of getting on the kite board. Its almost the same movement. People with board skills are riding in 2 days!

How much does it cost to get into kiteboarding
First investment in kitesurfing should be a kite lesson. It can cost from 240-500eur, it depends if you take private lesson, semiprivate lesson or if you prefer to learn in a group lesson. The fastest and most effective way of learning is in private lesson, one to one.
To buy new kite equipment, you can get started by investing from 1000 euros to 2000 euros, depending on the brand like North kiteboarding, Duotone, Cabrinha and also on the quality and newness of the kite gear. The kitesurf gear includes kite, bar, board, harness, life jacket, wetsuit and if you will kitesurf in cold conditions, also booties, gloves and hood.
Maybe is worth to start at the beginning with second-hand kite material and get the latest kite first when you learn to jump and some tricks.

What is the best and easiest kite for beginners to learn to kitesurf
To start with kitesurfing, you should get a bow kite. They are stable in the air, have good depower, large wind range, easy to relaunch when your kite falls in the water and what is the most important, to have a safety system or quick release which is very easy to use.

Can kitesurfing be dangerous
Yes, if you learn it on your own. For to start with kitesurf is essential to have a beginner lesson. Professional instructor will get you up and riding as soon as possible and, he will furnish you with safety know-how, which you definitely need in this adrenaline sport. Without this knowledge, you are a danger not just to yourself but also to everyone else on the beach and water.

What kit do you need for kite lesson
Dragon Tarifa kite school
provides the kit you need for to start with kitesurf. We have all sizes of kites, from 3 meters to 18m2. So, you never stay on the beach watching... We also provide different sizes of kite boards and safety equipment – harness, life-vest, wetsuit and helmet. Our kite equipment is adapted to go out to teach in all wind conditions for Tarifa so far it is safe. Sun protection is important too, in summertime we use 50! Choose waterproof sun-cream. For the first day of the lesson it is good to have sunglasses. You look up the whole time to your kite and it is easier if you protect your eyes.

How to body drag - 28.05.2019

Body dragging kitesurfing

Knowing how to body drag is one of the skill that every kiters should have. As an advanced rider or as a beginner, it is your best way to retrieve your board or to get over the waves. It will give you all the confidence you need to try new tricks, as you will know how to retrieve your board back. Using a leash, between you and the board is not recommended, as the board can hurt you while falling.

When learning body dragging, you will also develop a excellent kite control which can help you stay calm in case you’re without your board in the deeep water.

Your instructor will normally teach you this skill on your second day of your kite lesson, once you have some knowledge about the wind, the wind window, the safety system and a good kite control. He will first start by showing you the right body position as well as the kite postion, on the beach following by some exercice. Once you’re doing it right, you will go in the water. He will then show you how to body drag downwind and then how to body drag upwind.

It takes practice, but trust your instructor, it’s worth it!

Launch the kite - 07.05.2019

How to launch a kite

To launch a kite seems to be very easy, but lots of people doesn’t know how to do it properly. And its fundamental! The safest way to start the kite is with an assistant or somebody who can help to hold the kite.

During a kite lesson, you will learn all these necessary kitesurf skills safely. Once, you understand all about kite control, wind window and wind, it will be easy for you to launch the kite in a safe way.
The mostly kite accidents happen by launching the kite in a wrong way, on the beach and in strong wind conditions. So, don’t do it alone at the beginning, till you get all the knowledge needed. If the assistant is no kite surfer, you must explain to him before, what you are expecting him to do and that he needs to wait your signal, to let go the kite to fly.

The common mistake while launching a kite is not being in the right position. Mostly the beginner kitesurfer is too much upwind or downwind. So the kite get overpowered or you get flappy sail. By the first option you can fly away in the moment when the assistant let go your kite and in the second option the kite will fall down and in the worst-case flip over and fly out of control…

Here the steps to do successful launching:

  1. Ask your assistant to hold the kite in position.
  2. Take the bar and walk until the kite is in the 6 o´clock position or the edge of the wind window. Your back is to the wind and you are facing downwind.
  3. With your back to the wind, stretch your arm to the side, 90 degrees to the wind, towards the kite. The kite must be aligned with your hand. If not, you must move upwind or downwind.
  4. Best is to be slightly downwind of the kite during you making you ready, so you have less tension in the lines. When you get ready, walk into the wind until the kite fills with the wind.
  5. Take care not to tension up too much the lines which cause the assistant holding the kite to be pushed, what can be dangerous.
  6. When you want the assistant to let go the kite, show him the signal, thumb up. Now, you are ready to go! Have a fun :-)

History of Kitesurfing - 02.04.2019

History of Kitesurfing

As you all probably thought, we love kitesurfing. But to whom do we owe this adrenalin water sport? Who had the idea to use a kite to to enhance speed and gravity for the surfer? Let's have a look at the history of this fantastic sport we are all so enthusiastic about.

Well the first attempts to move with a kite on the water or to land were made as early as 1800 when people tried to escape the hated horse tax. At that time, it was George Pocock who used elevated size kites to propel ships on the water and carts on land with a four-line steering system - the same system used today.
Almost hundred years later Samuel Cody developed "Kite Lifting". He crossed the English Channel in a small collapsible canvas boat powered by a kite.
In 1977 the Dutchman Gijsbertus Adrianus Panhuise received the first patent on KiteSurfing. Although this patent did not arouse commercial interest, Gijsbertus Adrianus Panhuise could be considered the inventor of kitesurfing.
This patent relates in particular to a water sport with a floating board of a surfboard type in which a pilot standing on it is pulled by a windbreaker of a parachute type attached to his harness on a trapezoidal belt.

Another important name in the history of kitesurfing is Legaignoux. The two French brothers Bruno and Dominique Bruno Legaignoux developed kites for kitesurfing in the late 1970s and early 1980s and patented an inflatable kite design which was used by companies to develop their own products. The story of Kitesurfing continued by a few other people who further developed kitesurfing with improved equipment and techniques.

At the end of 1998, kitesurfing became an extreme sport, distributed and taught by a handful of shops and schools worldwide. The first competition took place on Maui in September 1998 and was won by Flash Austin.
Kitesurfing became mainstream in 1999 with the entry of the major windsurfing manufacturers Robby Naish and Neil Pryde. Single direction boards from the windsurf and surf design became the dominant form of the kiteboard which later developed to twind tip kitesurfboard.

If you like to get first touch with kitesurfing, let us know. Dragon Tarifa kiteschool will teach you safely and fast! Book your lesson: +34 660 882 710, email:

Why to visit Tarifa - 09.03.2019

Apart from the great opportunities to kitesurf Tarifa offers you a lot more that makes it worth a visit. The reputation as one of Europe’s top surfing destinations gives Tarifa a chilled, bohemian vibe which differs from other cities in Andalusia. This style is reflected in all areas of the city from the relaxed beach bars to the old city with its beautiful narrow streets and typical Andalusian white houses and courtyards with bright blue doors and window frames. You can have great Tapas and good wine in one of the charming restaurants and Tapas Bars.
Tarifa also offers good opportunities for shopping and compared to other small cities in Spain, Tarifa has several organic shops where you can get all the healthy food you need.
But of course there are also the beautiful Tarifas beaches! Tarifa is situated directly to the sea where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. With an amazing view to Africa which is only 14 km across the sea, you can walk along or just be lazy at the beautiful long white beaches like Balneario, Playa de Los Lances or Playa de Valdevaqueros, whit its unique huge sand dunes.
Besides all the colorful Kites you might be lucky to see Dolphins or even whales like Sperm Whales and Killer whales.
And if you’re tired of surfing or the beach, you could have a hike at one of the two natural parks close to Tarifa. At the Parque Natural del Estrecho and the Parque Natural Alcornocales, you can hike on the beautiful trails all year round and have some fantastic views of the sea and the mountainous landscape of Morocco.
Another fact which makes Tarifa unique is that it occupies the southernmost point of Europe and is just a short ferry ride (35 minutes) away from the Moroccan city Tanger.

Ready for vacations - 28.06.2018

Finally, it’s vacation time…but isn’t this kind of overwhelming? Suddenly no stress, no work…not just waiting for the weekend! So where to start?! How to plan the vacation you deserve to be able to relax?

Read this guide!

1.   Choose the Right Destination

The natural first step in planning a trip is figuring out where to go. A good choice is always where not everybody goes. There are always some spots which are very popular for tourists. Look for some secret towns, when you decide to which country you want to go. And these places are normally even cheaper.

2.    Book your flights and stay

To book these two things can be so relieving because there is no way back anymore! The vacations are becoming true!

3.    Plan the perfect activities

If your budget allows it, don’t just lie on the beach. Of course, this can be very relaxing, but discovering a new place too. It gives you so much more to remember.

4.    Get offline

Personally, this is one of the most satisfying thing about going away. Turn your phone off and just enjoy yourself. You worked enough lately, so take time just for yourself, let the work behind and live it up.

Sounds simple right? Then do it! Vacations are meant to be enjoyed!

San Juan in Tarifa - 25.06.2018

San Juan is the welcome to summer as it is a tradition in many maritime towns in Spain. This way they announce the arrival of the heat and the beach season.

In Tarifa, the night of San Juan is celebrated on June 23, lighting bonfires on almost all the beaches. Here it is called the burning of "Los Juanillos".

At the beach there are locals and visitors burning in bonfires puppets representing the local life and rag characters typical of the province of Cádiz for good luck over the coming months. The main figure burns at Playa Chica.

The beaches are changed in a festive atmosphere. Everyone gathers around the bonfires and they celebrate their own party also with barbecues.

Children and adults are playing in the sea, music is heard everywhere and laughs of happy people.

Health and care by the sea - 11.06.2018

Did you ever think about the effects of the sea on your health? It can be the best medicine for the organism.

We thought about five reasons why we should spend more time at the sea

1. The sea is good for the soul

It all starts with the sound of the sea which brings you an endless feeling of well-being. Walking barefeet on the sand, having a walk for hours and getting lost by your own thoughts, forgetting all the stress from home. Entering the water and feeling the movement of the waves on your body…out of the sudden you can feel so peaceful and relaxed.

2. Frees the respiratory tracts

Most of us live in cities where the air is polluted by all the cars and the dirt. Next to the sea a deep breath feels so relieving because the air feels so clean and pure. Small particles of jodine and salt help to open the respiratory tracts and out f the sudden you can feel so much more alive.

3. Cures the skin

The water of the sea hasanti-inflammatory effects on our skin. People who have skin problems profit a lot form the saltwater because the skin cures faster. Saltwater eliminates dead flakes, which makes it so smooth and pure. Let’s not forget about the beautiful teint it also gives us. But don’t fotget the sun protection! For the hair it it unfortunatelly the opposite. That’s why its important to wash the salty water out of the hair after a swim.

4. Strengthens up the immun system

Nex to the sea the body is surrounded by strong effects of the sun, wind and water which activate the circulation. Therefore, people barely get sick. Also the mucpus membrane get stronger by more resistant against infections.

5. Relieves the joints

The salt content in the water helps the joints and bones to relax. The sea also activates to move, e.g. for swimming which can be a gentle way for the joints to work out. A walk at the beach is also good for the muscles of the feets and knees.

So when is yournext trip to the sea?

Surfing: It all starts here… - 05.06.2018

Surfers on the beach

Surfing is not just jumping on a board and taking a wave while looking super cool...there is so much work behind it.

We tell you the five most important facts you should know about this sport!

1. Get the right board. For beginners a longboard with good volume is the perfect one to get a feeling for the balance and to be able to stand up the first time and you’ll catch a lot more waves in the early stages.

2. Sit on the board. It sounds weird, but the one who wants to ride a wave needs to learn to sit a board first, which is not the easiest thing

3. Paddle, Paddle, Paddle is a thing you will need to practice until you get it right. At the beginning you will think you´re completely out of shape, but every day it gets easier and you feel more and more strength in your arms

4. Get Used to Fall. You will be involved in a lot of whipeouts. This is part of the process…surfing means to fall a lot at the beginning. You will get frustrated, maybe get some bruises, but just remember that this is all part of the game.

5. Have Fun. No matter what you do and where you are, if you’re not having fun, it’s not worth it. Always remember that awesome quote by Phil Edwards: “The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun.”

Surfing is a very hard sport and at the beginning it may seem difficult to even get your first wave on your own! But once you stand on the board, you see that it was worth it. You will get more and more in shape, start to be braver and more confident by taking waves and this is what freedom means. Therefore, people fall in love with this sport! For sure you will soon know what we are talking about ;-)

Tarifa is a great place for birdwatching. - 26.10.2017

Bird watching, Tarifa and Punta Paloma

The Strait of Gibaltrar is one of the most useful place for the migration of birds due to its role as a gateway between both contients, Africa and Europe. In its favored wedge form  we can find the town Tarifa, with its Island “ The Isle of Pigeons”. Its peculiar nickname is not surprising, since its diversity of habitats both on land and in the sea, making it the perfect place for birdwatching.

The birdwatching can be enjoyed throughout the all year, however, the best moments for observation are concentrated in autumn and spring due to the mild climate. There are many groups of birds that can be seen in this environment, both marine and glider; being these the most spectacular due to its size and beauty. In our birding we can find birds such as: Black Kites, Storks, Honey Buzzards, Booted Eagles, Short-toed Eagles, Egyptian Vultures, Griffon Ruppell’s Vultures and Honey Buzzards

The variety of sites available, such as Punta Camorro y Cazalla, la playa de los Lances, la Sierra de la Plata, el Puerta de Facinas and la Janda wetland, converting Tarifa the perfect place for practise this activity.

Used kitesurfing equipment - 01.02.2017

You have a week of kite lesson behind you, you start to ride upwind and now you are keen to practice on your own. The next step in kitesurfing is to buy a kite gear. But, how to choose a kite ? How to buy a kite which suits you the best ? Choosing a kite can be a little overwhelming and before you go for it, you should know several important points.
The first to consider is your skill level. If you are beginner in this adrenaline water sport, you don´t need an expensive and the latest kite on the market. You will not see any difference at this point of learning and riding. And mostly people usually break their first kite :-) So why to spend too much money...It is better to invest it in kite holidays, weekend adventure travels and rest of the kitesurf equipment needed.
The most important is to know, what size kite should I buy ? The size will be based on your weight, average wind speed at your local kite spot and your kiteboard size.
If you are buying one kite for to start, we recommend that you go for a kite that will cover the most of the wind ranges at your local kitesurfing beach. Your kite instructor will help you go through all the kite material and choose the optimal kiteboarding package for you. It is great to read reviews on Internet, but talking to someone who has many years of experience in kitesurf and who rides lots of different kites, will save you a time and money in the long run.

How to do handle pass - 18.12.2016

How to do handle pass in kiteboarding.

Kitesurfing fitness workout

Increase your power and make handle pass easy for you. This is exercise for unhooked moves, helping to pass the bar faster. You build up your strength. Start slowly and with light weights. It can be heavy for your shoulders. You need to do a good warm up before to start, to activate all the muscles you will use and shoulder joint.
Once you have the technique right, put on more weight and try to do the movement faster. Try to tighten your core, straighten your back and find the balance. Lean forward to simulate your body position after a pop. Pull the bar to your hip and pass it before it gets weightless. This way you simulate slack in the lines.
Start to practice in gym, to avoid any stress for you shoulders and arms later on the water. In the gym you can concentrate on specific movement and later in the air it will be much more easier.

Surfing in Olympic games in Tokyo 2020 - 06.11.2016

Surfing at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo 2020

Surf has officially become an Olympic event.

The dream came true. IOC approves five new sports for Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Surfing, climbing, karate, skateboarding and baseball.
According to IOC rules, an Olympic discipline needs to have representation at least in 70 countries on 4 continents. Surf is practiced by about 30 million surfers in over 100 countries.
Since the 70s, the ISA (International Surfing Association) is trying to include the sport in the Olympic Games. The Brazilian Federation also wrote the official request for surf to be included as a discipline at the Games in Brazil 2016, but without any luck; golf and rugby were choosen instead.

Details of the surf competition in summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020:

  • Surfing will take place in the ocean, not in a wave pool. Venue will be at Chiba, a famous surf place near Tokyo.
  • There will be 40 competitors, 20 men, 20 women.
  • Shortboards only.

Sliding from heelside to toeside - 16.09.2016

 Sliding from heelside to toeside

Once you got kiteboarding under control, it's time to start with some tricks. Switch riding or riding toeside is a nice one. It opens up the door to new tricks and transitions. If  you're riding a surfboard, then riding toeside is essential.
Pick a day when the water is flat and the wind is steady. You need easy weather conditions for learning toeside riding. You also need to be powered up, with light wind it will be much more difficult by this manoeuvre. If you're underpowered then you'll sink.
Learn how to change from heelside to toeside. It's not so hard, but you need to learn the good kiting technique. There are 2 ways how to do it. Sliding or popping.

1. Ride your kite at medium speed. Keep the kite at around 10 or 11 O'clock. Having it high in the wind window, you'll naturally get more lift, making your 180º easier.
2. Move your body weight over the board. Begin transferring your weight forward slightly.  When you're riding toeside, your back foot changes.
3. You need to move your board through 180º quickly though, otherwise you sink.
4. Pull the kite bar towards the hip.
5. Turn your shoulders and follow your feet with the rest of your body.
6. Maintain the kite's power. You'll always lose some power as you make the change to toeside, so don´t forget to power your kite up.
7. Put weight on the toes of your new back foot.
8. Let go your front hand off the bar. This will naturally twist your body and help to ride toeside easily.

Surf the waves with a kite - 12.02.2016

Surf a wave with a kite and jump with a surfboard.
How to surf a wave with kite

Did you know that you can surf a wave with a kite ? It´s just amazing. You can use twin tip board or surf-kite board. You can stay on a wave for so long and of course, no need for paddle !!! The best is to start with small waves, to understand how it works. Before you go out, observe the wave, see where it´s breaking. The mostly mistake from beginners is, that the kite looses its power, when they turn on the wave. You will finish in the middle of the waves, in the lines...and the probability that your kite breaks, its very big. Don´t swim in the lines and if necessary, use your safety system and let go the kite. But you will see, after 1 day in the waves, you will get it ! We offer also surf-kite lesson in Tarifa, if you prefer to learn it with an experience surf-kite teacher :-)
